Post Bali – Tips and Tricks

Not. Just a summary of where I stayed, ate, played, massaged.

Accomodation

Dejabu Villas

Email them for a quote or you can book at Bali Villas which is a compilation of hundreds of villas in Seminyak.

I was liasing with a Ms Putu, and she’s really nice, gave me some advice about the distance, cab fares and all.

Spa

Murano Spa

Jl. Dewi Saraswati (kunti II), Seminyak
Bali – Indonesia
Tel : +62 361 738 140 or +62 361 738 139 or +62 361 806 0736

Free pick up within Kuta area for minimum 2 pax. The website also has a booking form and a list of packages and treatments that they offer.

It’s best to book in advance, at least the first one. If you like it, you can book another appointment with the counter staff at the spa when you’re there.

You can also email muranospa@gmail.com. I think the guy’s name is Kadek.

Played

Sadly, only had time for Waterbom and didn’t go for horseriding!

But still Waterbom was a blast!

Jl. Kartika PO BOX 1055 Tuban
Kuta – Bali 80361
Indonesia
+62 361 755 676
+62 361 753 517

Don’t bother to email them, they take ages to reply. Haha, and most of the information are already available on the website.

They have towels, lockers, gazebos for rent at a small fee.

There’s also shower facilities within Waterbom, very clean.

Admission tickets cost US$26, which you can pay in USD or IDR, the latter is dependent on the current day exchange rate.

Ate

Rumours and Ultimo and The Junction (just a few doors down from each other)

Jalan Laksmana, Seminyak
Seminyak, Indonesia
(0)36 173 8720 (for Rumours)

Rumours for hearty western-style cuisine, wagyu steak, fish & chips, chocolate icecream.

Ultimo for Italian fare, think pizza, pasta, veal, tiramisu.

The Junction for crepes, drinks, they also have main courses which I didn’t look out for.

We spent an average of S$35 for two person, with 2 main course, starters, drinks at Rumours and Ultimo.

Sakanaya by Ryoshi

Jl Sunset Road., 77X, Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia.
Tel: 0361-8475950

Sakanaya, basically, fish shop (if my Japanese didn’t fail me), sells seafood fresh from the many tanks in the shop, sashimi, ramen and other Japanese fare.

Affordable food, about S$5 for a bowl of ramen.

Shop

Shop at those roadside stalls and remember to BARGAIN, BARGAIN, BARGAIN.

Start with at least 50% off the price. Unless you think it’s already very cheap and you accept the price, then please go ahead.

Don’t buy, don’t touch, don’t ask.

Boutiques are super expensive, go to Pasar Oleh Oleh, it’s near Sakanaya by Ryoshi, which is the Sunset Road.

Cheap and well-ventilated with proper fitting rooms. Sells a wide assortment of handicrafts, clothes, teeshirts, food.

Other tips and tricks

Remember to keep 150,000IDR for the departure tax payable at the airport.

Don’t touch the stray dogs. Beware of RABIES.

Bring your own mats to Kuta beach.

Buy your own drinking water and drink lots of it. Weather is scorching hot in Bali.

Keep a low profile and try not to carry too much cash / valuables around.

Look carefully at your money when you’re paying. Don’t mistake 100,000IDR for 10,000IDR. This is very important! Just take your time, don’t have to worry, they’ll understand.

Bali 2010 – Part II

Thinking back, I was really glad that I wasn’t going alone and staying in the villa all by myself. I have no problems sleeping alone or being in the dark but the thought of so many non-human population being within reach kinda freaked me out.

There’s no knowing WHEN they’d decide to DROP ON you, or you might just step them. Also, it’s really not that good an idea to go to a new place alone since you’re not familiar with that country. I’d go to HK or BKK alone, I’ve decided.

Just not to Bali. Until I’m totally familiar with that place, I’d consider. 😛

So big thanks to Ms Han for offering to accompany me and although she was late for 8 hours, we still had a lot of fun!

29 September

Woke up bright and early for our adventure at Waterbom Bali! I’d read about this themepark from TripAdvisor (got some really good advice there) and after reading many rave reviews, I decided to add it in our itinerary!

I’d expected it to be like Wild Wild Wet but slightly more exciting, but turns out it was 10 times more exciting lah.

I brought US$50 there, to purchase the tickets in USD so that I wouldn’t have to pay a higher rate because of the exorbitant exchange rate at the counter. They didn’t want to accept my USD because it was the 1996 series and they only accept series from year 2000 onwards. WTF right?

So my 1996 series not worth as much as the 2000 series? Simi sai. I think they were just out to make things difficult for me ‘cos I ain’t blonde. BAH.

And I have to say, the theme park was SWAMPED with caucasians, hereby known as AMR (angmoh rangs, because Karen lao hong when she said it, hahaha), so much that we felt like we’re in Australia or something.

The themepark opens at 9 and when we reached there at 9.45am, there were already long queues at the counters. You can tell that it’s really popular lah.

Address: Jalan Kartika Plaza
P.O. Box 1055, Tuban Kuta, Bali 80361
Indonesia
Tel: 62-361-755676
Fax: 62-361-758243

Tickets cost US$26 (can pay in US$ or IDR)

First ride we queued up for was Boomerang (top left-hand corner, green and orange slides) and I was totally freaking myself out on the way up. It’s at least 4 floors up! OMG! Imagine climbing up the overhead bridge 4 times, ok, and you’d get the idea.

First, you go through a tunnel loop and then followed by a near 90°drop so that you gain enough speed to go up the ramp at the other end (another 2-3 storeys high) and eventually slide down the rest of the way into the pool.

IT IS CRAZY I TELL YOU.

You don’t feel much of the 90° slide (too damn fast) but the ramp was OH-MY-GOD-JUST-LET-ME-DIE cos you go back down backwards!

Nearly died of a heart attack.

But I think I deserve a pat on the back for conquering ALL my fears in one ride. Fear of heights, water and high-speed rides.

Round of applause, please.

Well, after the ride, we were pretty much game for ANYTHING the park had to offer. We sat out the Climax because it looked WAAAAAAAAAY too scary. It’s a freefall drop with the trap-door opening as and when the slide operator felt like it.

The rest of the slides seem comparatively mild, once you’ve tried the Boomerang and the Superbowl (orange one next to Boomerang). Still lots of fun, nonetheless.

It was also here that my waterproof camera decided to die on me. SUCKS LOR. Brought the camera to the themepark thinking that I could take photos w/o worrying that my camera would get wet, but it DIED.

So most of the photos are in Karen’s camera. BOO.

The park operates on a cashless system, you put some money into an “account” which is really a barcode on a wristband that they assign to you. You use this wristband to pay for lockers, towels, gazebos, food and drinks within the park. They don’t accept cash within the park except for top up of the wristband account.

Waterbom is definitely a must-try for all themepark lovers. Totally worth it. 🙂

Went for lunch at Discovery Mall (just opposite Waterbom, how convenient!), they have an A&W there! Woo! 2 piece chicken meal costs about 45,000IDR. Quite expensive, considering that a main course (like fish & chips) at Rumours costs about the same! Hmm.

Nothing much at Discovery Mall, SOGO sells overpriced blogshop-quality clothes and I was too tired to really shop.

Bought a book from Periplus at S$10 (Cecilia Ahern’s Book of Tomorrow) and I’ve come to a conclusion that Bali has cheap books.

Argh.

Then it was back to the villa for our transport to pick us up for spa! Yay! Perfect for my aching legs and shoulders, from carrying the double floats!

My selected treatment was honey bath and Karen got the milk bath. Shiok! I think they used REAL honey ‘cos I could smell the sweetness when they applied it on me! Hmm.

Was a bit worried that ants would start crawling up on me. =__=”

Got back to the villa after our spa session and prepared for dinner! I helped draw Hahahan’s eyeliner! So nice right, I told her eyeliner opens up the eyes and every girl should learn how to apply eyeliner. And I was right, see, she looks better with eyeliner, yes?

*beams*

Took some photos at the front desk while waiting for our cab to come. In Bali, take the Bluebird cabs as these mostly go by meter and they are clustered by areas within the island.

The hotel / villa / resort concierge or front desk should be able to get you one of these cabs easily as their HQ is usually a few minutes away. You can also arrange with the cab driver to come and pick you in the morning or whenever.

Like for us, we didn’t plan to go on tours, so we didn’t book a driver. Not necessary because cabs are EVERYWHERE in Bali. Plenty to go around, so you don’t have to worry about getting stuck outside.

Just make sure you tell the driver to go by meter and that you roughly know the way so that they can’t cheat you!

Arrived at Ultimo, which is really just further up from Rumours, I believe these restaurants belong to a bigger group, same management.

Wore my maxi-dress from Gmarket, vest from BYSI, sandals from Vincci. Love the dress ‘cos it’s so flowy and soft, plus doesn’t restrict my movements. Haha.

Ultimo was really beautiful! Love the ambience, decó and the live band. They have indoor and alfresco seating, just let the crew know where you want to sit. I didn’t make any reservations, I think you don’t need to since it’s quite a big restaurant, at least 50 tables, I think.

Got a shock from reading the menu. The food is TMD-DAMN-CHEAP. I can’t really remember how much each dish costs but I remember being totally shocked and I couldn’t believe how cheap it was. I made Karen calculate in SGD and it was indeed CHEAP!

Hahahaha.

We ordered an appetizer, tomato with cheese, grilled lobster, a pizza (to share), tiramisu, lemon sorbet, fruit juices and the bill only came up to about S$33. I paid by credit card ‘cos I didn’t have enough rupiahs with me and they didn’t charge me extra for processing fees.

LOVE!

Went back to the villa after dinner and inspiration struck.

We started taking jump shots! Wahaha, I love taking jump shots but they are so damn difficult to coordinate! Roar.

Plus my expressions in jump shots always look RETARDED.

Sigh.

But I managed to pull off a two good ones this time!

It’s really hard trying to jump with a long dress. Nearly fell flat on my face stepping on my own dress. -____-”

As you can see, the room is facing the pool and it’s really big! There’s space for a leather 3-seater, king sized bed, an LCD TV. And a really HUGE walk-in wardrobe cum open concept toilet.

Photos of that in Day 3’s post!

Bali 2010 – Part I

So, I’ve been back from Bali for a week! And then it was busy, busy, busy, ‘cos Daddy was admitted and I was shuttling from home to work to the hospital to school. It’s just rush, rush, rush everyday since I came back.

Finally have some time to sit down in front of my computer to blog about the trip since I have some time to spare before going for a wedding lunch!

I’m going to do this in chronological order, from Day 1 to Day 4, so that I don’t miss out anything.

28 September

Took the mid-morning flight to Bali on Airasia, at 10am. Mummy sent me off to the airport because I was taking the flight alone. Ms Han was joining me 6 hours later. Haha, long story, don’t ask.

It was my first time taking a flight alone, luckily it was only for 2.5 hours, so I slept. And tried to read.

Dan Brown’s, The Lost Symbol. I still haven’t finished, btw. Argh.

‘Twas an uneventful flight, very smooth, but we were delayed for 15 minutes, so the poor driver from the villa had to wait for me.

Sat beside a really nice couple, forgot to bring a pen and they lent me one. Hahaha.

The queue at the immigration was not terribly long, but the guy at my counter took really long to process each passenger. Meh. Super slow poke.

By the time I finished with all these, it was nearly 2pm already. I touched down at 12.45pm lah. Not to mentioned I waited in the wrong queue for a while. Hahaha.

The villa I booked had provided for 2-way transfer to and from the airport, so I didn’t have to haggle with the taxi drivers outside for a trip to the villa. But I heard from Ms Han who had to take a taxi to the villa ‘cos she’s one flight later than me, the fare from the airport to the villa at Seminyak costs IDR100,00 which is about S$15. Cheap, considering the villa quoted me US$25 for one way extra. *horrified look*

Dejabu Villas

The journey from the airport to the villa took about 20 minutes because there were SOOOO many cars on the roads! At 2.30pm?? Don’t know where they’re going lah, we passed by Planet Hollywood, the GIGANTIC DFS Galleria and finally reached the villa.

Finally arrived at the villa! And this is mine! No.2. There’s a small pavilion thing outside, the living area, and deck chairs for sunbathing.

Looks good eh! But it’s horrifying to be alone inside after night falls because all the non-human population starts coming out to play and hunt for food. Gah.

And night fall in Bali is super early, the sun starts to set at about 6pm! By 7pm, it’s all dark. -____-”

Ms Han ETA at Denpasar airport was 6.30pm, and by the time she reached the villa, it’s 8.30pm already. And I had to endure 2 hours of darkness alone. OMG.

Well, I wasn’t alone. There were 3 lizards, COUNTLESS OF FLIES, a few bugs and 2 frogs.

Really.

Luckily I had the foresight to book a spa session at Murano Spa so I won’t be rotting alone in the villa. I was having the seasalt bath treatment. Very shiok!

The masseuse was very strong lah so my massage was a bit more torturous than enjoyment. Hahaha, but overall it was still very good, love the flower bath at the end. Teehee.

Photos of the spa in Day 3’s post, wait for it.

When Ms Han finally arrived at the villa (longest 8 hours in my life!), she settled in and we went out for dinner at Rumours. Found out about this restaurant from Jenny, who’s going in November but already did ALL the research for her trip. Hahaha, well, lucky me, ‘cos I got to reap the rewards of her EXTENSIVE research. 😛

I was planning for 3 nights of dinner at Rumours because, 1. it’s DIRT CHEAP, compared to Singapore, 2. it’s super near our villa (10 mins via taxi), 3. I didn’t want to risk getting food poisoning from eating at the local stalls since that’d mean going to the doctors (don’t know if I can trust their skills, :X) and one of us will be left alone at any one point of time.

No photos of the food because I was too hungry and it was too dark for photos anyway. Flash will ruin everything. Ha.

I had the black pepper steak and Ms Han had the fish & chips. We also shared a seafood soup (tomato-based) and  a caesar salad between us. The food wasn’t too bad but I think I should have ordered my steak medium rare instead of medium well because it came too WELL. So it turned out to be a tad too dry. Sobs.

The bill was cheap though. Heh. I think it was about S$30? Cheap lah, by Singapore’s standards. Hoho, a meal like that with 2 sides, 2 mains, 2 drinks would cost at least S$60 in a restaurant in Singapore.

We took a walk to Seminyak Square just down the road, plenty of surf brands like Quiksilver, Roxy, a bookstore (BALI HAS CHEAP BOOKS, The Lost Symbol was selling at S$10 there. -___-“) and a gourmet supermarket.

They didn’t have 7-11s there, but K-marts are aplenty! Sometimes just 2 doors away from each other. Ha.

Never fear that you’ll run out of Coke or water or tidbits!

And that’s the end of day 1! Cabbed back to the villa and prepared for an early day the next day ‘cos we’re going to WATERBOM! Exciting!
